Hearing Impaired Additionally Resourced Provision
Giving hearing impaired children the best possible start in life is our priority and preparing them for later life in a hearing world is our key goal.
Our specialist provision provides education for pupils with a hearing impairment within school and an outreach service for children in mainstream primary schools, Pre-school settings and families across North and South Kirklees. We have seven Teachers of the Deaf, ten specialist teaching assistants and a Deaf Support worker who work within school and outreach to ensure children with a hearing impairment have full access to the curriculum, support with any specialist hearing equipment that they may use and on transition to High Schools.
At Lowerhouses there is a positive approach to the inclusion of all pupils and children have access to all extracurricular activities. We encourage parents to come into school and be fully involved in their children’s education. During the year, a number of meetings and events are held with parents to discuss their child’s progression and parents’ are kept informed of forthcoming activities.
For some children British Sign Language is the first and foremost method of communication and a qualified BSL signer is provided for these children to ensure they have full access to the teaching.
